Visit Of President Gorbachev

That this House welcomes the visit of President Gorbachev to Britain at the conclusion of the G7 Summit and encourages those prudent measures which lead to the improvement of East-West relations; unreservedly condemns the use of Soviet forces in Vilnius last January which resulted in the deaths of 13 Lithuanian citizens; expresses deep concern at the continued intimidation of the democratically elected Baltic governments and the continued presence of the Soviet forces in Poland; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to continue to monitor the development of relations between the central Soviet authorities and the Baltic states and the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Poland, and to assist in the development of constructive negotiations between the central authorities and the Baltic states with a view towards Baltic independence.
