President Gorbachev And Young Children

EDM number 1148 in 1990-91, proposed by Peter Bottomley on 17/07/1991.

That this House believes that under United Nations, European and other conventions, declarations and legislation the young children Mariya and Anna Gordievsky are entitled with their mother to join their father outside the USSR; welcomes the achievements of the USSR and President Gorbachev on the way to the progress and problems of a flexible political and economic process; hopes that on balance the judgment has been right to let President Gorbachev's visit proceed without an eye-catching demonstration of the ludicrous illustration of the strength of the security apparatus in prohibiting foreign travel by young children; and calls for President Gorbachev's USSR to be seen as a country strong enough to survive permission being given to Mariya and Anna to travel.
