Statutory Sickness Payments And Low Pay In Wales
EDM number 1156 in 1990-91, proposed by Paul Murphy on 17/07/1991.
That this House deplores the raising of the higher qualifying earnings threshold of statutory sickness payment which has the intended effect of eliminating low-paid workers from entitlement to the higher level of benefit, which is low in itself; notes that those changes will have an especially bad impact in Wales where there is a very large number of low-paid workers, many of them women; and calls upon the Government to reverse these changes, so as to ensure the provision of a decent and respectable income to working people when absent from work through illness.
