Marketing Of Timeshare
EDM number 1158 in 1990-91, proposed by Colin Shepherd on 17/07/1991.
That this House records its grave concern and disquiet over the methods of certain companies which market Timeshare purchase opportunities; notes the unscrupulous methods deployed to tempt purchasers such as the one utilised by one company, Surrey Leisure Marketing, which uses various names such as Infostar Ltd, with offices in Bristol, and which has been attracting hundreds of people to special presentations by promising expensive gifts; further notes that these people are subjected to an aggressive hard selling pitch more fitted to an interrogation room and that non purchasers are sent away empty handed despite the lavish promises; notes that many people are entering binding agreements on the spot despite vigorous campaigns in the Press that there should be time for reflection; and urges the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry to bring further legislation in the forthcoming parliamentary session to extend the protection provided by existing legislation in respect of consumer goods to cover the sale of Timeshare and the gift offered by way of promotion of the sale of Timeshare.
