Aid For The South-West

EDM number 1183 in 1990-91, proposed by Matthew Taylor on 23/07/1991.

That this House welcomes Her Majesty's Government's financial aid to encourage employment to Cumbria; notes that in the South West unemployment has risen by 72 per cent. since June 1990, and that in certain parts of th South West removal of regional aid and assisted area status has led to big increases in unemployment, for example in Ilfracombe, where the unemployment rate is currently around 17 per cent. , and St. Austell, where recent large job losses in the china clay industry have hit all local businesses; recognises the difficulty in finding new employment and of attracting new investment into rural areas in the run up to the Single European Market; and calls for an urgent review of regional aid and an immediate expansion of assisted area status.
