Secretary Of State For Wales And The Poll Tax
EDM number 126 in 1990-91, proposed by Paul Murphy on 27/11/1990.
That this House notes the comments of the Secretary of State for Wales regarding the poll tax when he says he tried to reform this most unwanted tax; also notes that a parliamentary answer only last week confirmed his belief that 'the community charge with its benefit system is fair' and that this is identical with the view he expressed on 15th January; expresses concern over the sudden change of view of the Secretary of State who is joining those Ministers who are lining up to ditch the poll tax for which they are collectively responsible and which earned him the well-deserved name of Dai Poll Tax; condemns the brutal use of the Welsh people as guineapigs for a wicked and unjust tax; is saddened by these actions which must redefine the meaning of political cynicism; and concludes that his views have not really changed except in terms of what he believes will bring electoral advantage.
