The Honourable Member For Salisbury

EDM number 144 in 1990-91, proposed by Simon Hughes on 29/11/1990.

That this House notes the comments of the junior Environment Minister, the honourable Member for Salisbury, as reported in the Avon Advertiser on Wednesday,28th November, where he said that neither of the other candidates had the qualities to deal with the difficult economy at home, the complicated situation in Europe or the crisis in the Gulf; and that"Mr Heseltine is rather impetuous as we have seen in the past, and a large number of my constituents are rather unforgiving about him forcing Mrs Thatcher out.Mr Major has not had anything like the experience he needs-but then his time has yet to come";and in the light of the fact that the Right honourable Member for Huntingdon is the new Prime Minister and the right honourable Member for Henley is the new Environment Secretary, calls upon the junior Environment Minister, the Member for Salisbury, either to retract his statement in the Avon Advertiser or to concede that continuing in government office is not compatible with his declared views of his two new bosses.
