Human Rights In Turkey

EDM number 145 in 1990-91, proposed by Mark Fisher on 30/11/1990.

That this House welcomes the signing and ratifying of international human rights treaties by Turkey and the announcement in September 1989 of draft amendments to Articles 141, 142 and 163 of the Penal Code which currently curb peaceful political and religious activities; however, remains concerned about the continued detention, and calls for the release, of two journalists in Turkey, Ilker Demir, imprisoned since 1984 and Alaattin Sahin, imprisoned since 1980, for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression as set out in Article 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights; is anxious about Turkey's recent derogation from Articles 5, 6, 8, 10, 11 and 13 of the European Convention on Human Rights; and urges Her Majesty's Government to use every possible means to place pressure on the Turkish Government to implement the draft amendments to the penal code which would go some way towards an improvement in the human rights situation in Turkey.
