Intensive Pig Production
EDM number 158 in 1990-91, proposed by Ron Davies on 04/12/1990.
That this House endorses the views expressed by the Farm Animal Welfare Council and the Select Committee on Agriculture that the use of dry sow stalls for restraining breeding sows is contrary to the welfare of the animals; notes that such method of restraint prevents sows from turning round throughout the period of pregnancy and is still employed for tethering 50 per cent. of breeding sows in the United Kingdom; and calls upon the Government to ban the installation of new systems of this type and to phase out existing systems within a period of three years.
