Protection Of The Natural Heritage

That this House expresses its alarm at the recent answers to questions concerning damage and destruction of sites of special scientific interest which reveal the following record of loss in: (a) 1987-88 - 166 sites damaged and 27,297 hectares affected, (b) 1988-89 - 241 sites damaged and 30,067 hectares affected and (c) 1989-90 - 324 sites damaged and 91,677 hectares affected, and that this evidence of an accelerating trend does not justify the official view that present arrangements provide adequate protection for such vital areas; and calls for urgent action to be taken forthwith to stem the tide of destruction which the recent parliamentary answers demonstrate.
