Continuing Search For Peace In The Gulf

EDM number 297 in 1990-91, proposed by David Alton on 15/01/1991.

That this House urges Her Majesty's Government, notwithstanding the passing of the United Nations deadline, to continue to support and encourage any possible diplomatic initiative aimed at achieving a just and peaceful resolution of the crisis in the Gulf; further urges Her Majesty's Government not to accept, even at this stage, the inevitability of war; and equally, should hostilities commence, urges the allied commanders to ensure that any force used should only be the minimum necessary to secure compliance with the objective of restoring the independence and security of Kuwait, and that as each military and political decision is taken full weight is given to the particularly horrifying human and environmental risks of the conflict.
