Freedom Of The Baltic States

EDM number 316 in 1990-91, proposed by Margaret Ewing on 21/01/1991.

That this House, outraged at the deaths in Riga caused by Soviet forces seeking to repress the desire for independence of the people of Latvia, believes that the Western powers must now question the wisdom of continuing to give political support and legitimacy to the Gorbachev regime; applauds those Soviet citizens who have courageously demonstrated opposition to the Kremlin; calls upon the Government to reaffirm that the United Kingdom has never accepted the incorporation of the Baltic states into the Soviet Union; and urges that if its policy in the face of brutality and dictatorship is to be consistent then it and our partners in the European Community must urgently consider appropriate economic measures to constrain Soviet actions.

This motion has been signed by a total of 12 MPs.
