Modern Language Options

EDM number 516 in 1990-91, proposed by Roy Beggs on 21/02/1991.

That this House condemns the proposal of the Department of Education in Northern Ireland to exclude modern language options in primary B.Ed. courses in Northern Ireland, whilst at the same time retaining Irish, thus penalising primary children and teachers seeking to prepare themselves for life in Europe and abroad after 1992; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to review this situation in the light of recent reports from the Modern Language Committee and the House of Lords Select Committee on modern language provision in the primary sector.

This motion has been signed by a total of 27 MPs.
