International Whaling Commission

That this House believes that a moratorium on commercial whaling is essential to the conservation of whales; notes that eight out of 10 species of Great Whale have been put at severe risk due to commercial whaling; notes that current whaling techniques such as the detonating harpoon as used by Japan and Norway are archaic and unnecessarily cruel; believes that a resumption of commercial whaling could lead to the rapid depletion of whale numbers; recognises the contribution Britain has made to whale conservation in the past; and calls upon the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to continue his steadfast opposition to commercial whaling and to vote against the lifting of the moratorium at this year's annual general meeting of the International Whaling Commission.
