Door Safety On British Rail

EDM number 785 in 1990-91, proposed by Eric Illsley on 01/05/1991.

That this House notes that whilst the total number of movement accidents on British Rail has fallen over the past three years, the proportion of deaths caused by intermittent faults on carriage doors fitted with slam-shut locking mechanisms has increased; is unconvinced by the findings of the Knight Wendling Consultancy Report (February 1991), which was denied sufficient time and authority properly and comprehensively to examine the facts; and believes that the 700 incidents resulting in more than 200 deaths over the past 10 years are so serious that the Secretary of State should establish a completely independent inquiry to examine the evidence and to determine whether there was a common cause.

This motion has been signed by a total of 5 MPs.
