Mortgage Insurance
EDM number 257 in 1991-92, proposed by Marjorie Mowlam on 26/11/1991.
That this House is alarmed and dismayed by reports that homebuyers who have insured their mortgage payments against loss of job or disablement are being misled when they take out a policy initially and cheated when they try subsequently to claim against it; and calls upon the Department of Trade and Industry to investigate, as a matter of urgency, this situation to determine its full extent, revise current legislation to provide redress where necessary and counsel the Prime Minister to make good the glaring omission from the Citizen's Charter, which fails patently to propose protection for the consumer who seeks to conclude the most important personal financial contract of a lifetime, namely the purchase of a house.
