Conduct Of The Prime Minister

EDM number 262 in 1991-92, proposed by Brian Sedgemore on 26/11/1991.

That this House notes that when the Prime Minister was asked on 26th November by the honourable Member for Sunderland South to state whether he accepted the principle of a single currency and to answer yes or no he replied 'It is entirely clear from the documents in front of us in the Treaty that what we are doing is entirely enabling for ourselves to have an option to opt in and we are not committed to opting in by anything either in Clause 2 or any later part of the Treaty'; believes that this answer is so confused that it raises doubts as to what the Prime Minister's objectives are; further believes that his answer is proof that the Prime Minister is more concerned with patching up the yawning divisions in his own party than with advancing the interests of Britain and the British people in the current negotiations; and calls on the Prime Minister to put country before party.
