Contamination Of The River Ribble

EDM number 295 in 1991-92, proposed by Michael Carr on 28/11/1991.

That this House is alarmed by the findings of the Friends of the Earth report Profits Before Safety into radioactive discharges from the British Nuclear Fuel's Springfield Works; believes that BNFL is failing to comply with its legal obligations by not employing discharge reduction technologies; condemns BNFL for its refusal to make public its technical justification for not employing reduction technology; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to revoke BNFL's new authorisation and prevent resumption of discharges until BNFL has employed technology to reduce the discharges using the best practicable means; urges BNFL to only process uranium ore concentrates from low-thorium sources; and requests that the Minister of Agriculture perform an urgent habitat survey in the area within 10 kilometres radius of the Springfield Works as well as undertaking a full monitoring survey to identify the full extent of contamination along the River Ribble.

This motion has been signed by a total of 15 MPs.
