Plans To Demolish Coventry Playscheme Building

EDM number 394 in 1991-92, proposed by Dave Nellist on 12/12/1991.

That this House calls on Property Holdings to halt immediately its plans to demolish before Christmas the former district works office building, of Friars Road, Cheylesmore, Coventry, at which, for the last three years there has been a playscheme for the children of civil servants; recognises the strong need for childcare facilities in the centre of Coventry; understands that there are staff who accepted Civil Service jobs on the understanding that such provisions would be available; believes that all parents should have access to high quality, convenient and affordable childcare before young children start school before and after school hours, and during school holidays and that the expansion of publicly funded childcare is essential to achieve this; and urges Mr M. Tourell, senior property manager of Property Holdings, Midlands, to explore all options in retaining the building for childcare use before any further action is taken.
