Proposed Closure Of Post Office In Swansea (No.2)
EDM number 405 in 1991-92, proposed by Alan Williams on 16/12/1991.
That this House is appalled to learn that when a deputation of city councillors, county councillors and the Right honourable Member for Swansea West met Post Office representatives to discuss the proposed closure of Swansea's Wind Street Post Office they unanimously agreed that Post Office management's presentation was the most inept they had ever witnessed; notes their astonishment when management discounted most petition signatories because they did not live in the area, ignoring the fact that many worked in nearby shops and offices; is amazed that management then said they should use their home area post offices, unaware that work-people leave home before local post offices open and return home after they close; is concerned that management did not know if Wind Street made a profit or loss, but conceded that it covers operating costs and that the region was meeting financial targets; is amused that in assessing car parking places for customers, management did not understand that, in a working day, a two-hour car park's capacity is at least four times the number of physical parking places; notes management's indifference that elderly and disabled residents would have to cross the busy town centre to use the nearest alternative post office and regards as cynical their view that no business would be lost because people on benefit would have no alternative; and requires the Post Office Chairman to remind Welsh management that their service has social responsibilities which should not be abandoned, especially when financial targets already are being achieved.
