United States And East Timor

EDM number 408 in 1991-92, proposed by George Galloway on 16/12/1991.

That this House remembers that on 7th December 1975 Indonesia invaded the former Portugese colony of East Timor, beginning a series of massacres which have left more than 100,000 people dead, and annexed East Timor as Indonesia's 27th province; notes that this brutal and illegal obliteration of a nation did not provoke the mobilisation of either international economic sanctions or a multinational armed force to reverse this aggression, indeed it was business as usual with Indonesia; notes that on 6th December 1975, that is, the day before the invasion, United States President Gerald Ford and his Secretary of State, Nobel Peace Prize winner Henry Kissinger were in Jakarta at the invitation of Indonesian dictator Suharto and were apprised of the intended annexation the very next day; and predicts that this anniversary will be little noticed in the new world order.

This motion has been signed by a total of 17 MPs.
