Welfare Labelling Of Food Products Of Animal Origin
EDM number 461 in 1991-92, proposed by Ron Davies on 13/01/1992.
That this House regrets that during 12 years of Conservative Government no meaningful measure has been introduced to ensure consumers are adequately informed about the husbandry systems used for the production of animal products for human consumption; believes that there is a large and growing proportion of consumers who wish to know that animal products, especially pork and bacon, poultry, eggs and veal have been produced under systems which have full regard to the welfare of the animals involved and that the animals have been handled, transported and slaughtered in the most humane conditions possible; calls upon the Government to recognise this public awareness and to adopt the Labour Party proposals for a comprehensive system of welfare labelling for food products of animal origin by introducing appropriate measures without delay but recognises that, as like so many other desirable innovations, this measure is likely to have to await a Labour government before it is implemented with enthusiasm, conviction and determination.
