20th Anniversary Of Bloody Sunday

EDM number 523 in 1991-92, proposed by Harry Barnes on 21/01/1992.

That this House, believes that the deaths of 13 innocent people in Londonderry on Bloody Sunday 20 years ago was a terrible tragedy which has left enduring scars, particularly amongst Catholics in Northern Ireland; further believes that the Widgery enquiry, set up at the time to examine Bloody Sunday, was wholly inadequate and has been discredited; considers that, in the light of the setting aside of the Guildford Four, Maguire Seven and Birmingham Six verdicts, the Widgery enquiry should be re-opened; welcomes the call from the cross-party New Consensus peace group for all papers relating to Bloody Sunday to be preserved and made available in the Public Record Office in 2003; further welcomes the call by New Consensus for an independent historical commission of reputable academics and commentators to use all available evidence and, in particular, the excellent Secret History documentary on Bloody Sunday recently screened by Channel 4 and to be shown in Committee Room 9 at 7 p.m. on Wednesday 22nd January; also accepts the rejection by New Consensus of double standards on violence and its belief that the best way to deprive the terrorists of the oxygen of publicity is to tell the truth about Bloody Sunday which is considered widely to have been a monstrous abuse of state power; and forcefully condemns those who criticise Bloody Sunday but cynically and hypocritically exploit it to justify the murderous campaign of the Provisional IRA.
