Freedom Of Expression

EDM number 676 in 1991-92, proposed by Bob Cryer on 13/02/1992.

That this House understands that there is no absolute right of freedom of expression; realises that the law of libel and other restrictions qualify that right but fully supports publication of views within the law and condemns all individuals or groups who explicitly or implicitly endorse the threat of death on Salman Rushdie; recalls that 14th February represents the third anniversary of the author's existence as a hostage in his own country for exercising his freedom within the law; understands that repeal of the remnant of the blasphemy laws would place all religions on a fair basis and calls for this legislation to be introduced; and at the same time calls for the condemnation by all religious groups of the death threat on Salman Rushdie so that he may exchange ideas in a spirit of goodwill free from the cancer of intolerant righteousness.
