Ozone Depletion

EDM number 725 in 1991-92, proposed by Menzies Campbell on 20/02/1992.

That this House calls Her Majesty's Government's urgent attention to the reports from NASA and the United Nations Environment Programme showing, respectively, that ozone depletion is growing rapidly over the Northern Hemisphere and that, world-wide, incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer may increase by 26 per cent; notes that these reports are authoritative scientific studies; requests the Secretary of State for the Environment to press for an emergency meeting of the Montreal Protocol with the aim of banning the non-essential use of CFCs and halons within months not years; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to fund research into alternatives to CFCs for vital installations such as bloodbanks; and urges Her Majesty's Government to give practical financial help to British industry in speeding up the switch from use of CFCs.

This motion has been signed by a total of 19 MPs.
