Local Representation For Bressay

EDM number 750 in 1991-92, proposed by James Wallace on 26/02/1992.

That this House notes with total dismay the decision of the Secretary of State for Scotland to ignore the overwhelmingly expressed view of the 264 islanders of Bressay, Shetland, that their distinctive island community should be entitled to separate representation on Shetland Islands Council; believes that his aim of securing a more equal number of electors in each ward is substantially diminished by the support given to the Bressay islanders' case by the communities most likely to feel prejudiced by a large imbalance in numbers; further believes that if it has cost the public purse ú3 billion in post-conflict expenditure to satisfy the paramount wishes of 2,000 Falklands Islanders, separate representation on Shetland Islands Council is a small price to pay to meet the Bressay citizens' wish to 'let Bressa' be'; and therefore calls upon the Secretary of State to reverse his decision.

This motion has been signed by a total of 10 MPs.
