May Day

EDM number 1001 in 1992-93, proposed by Derek Enright on 03/12/1992.

That this House notes that May Day has been celebrated since medieval times, and even before, when Walpurgis night revels took place in England Wales, and fires of celebration were set alight in a free Scotland; recalls the commonly sung refrain 'Out with famine, in with wealth and health'; and recognises that Maia was goddess of growth and increase; therefore fully understands why the Prime Minister wishes to abolish that ancient British holiday since he has reduced Britain to a joyless state, impoverished it in spirit, closed its hospitals and presided over a rapid decline in its output and wealth.
