Chairman Of The Mersey Regional Health Authority And The Macclesfield Health Authority

That this House notes the assurances which were given in July by Sir Donald Wilson, Chairman of the Mersey Regional Health Authority, to the honourable Member for Macclesfield that there would be no merger between or amalgamation of the Macclesfield Health Authority and the Crewe Health Authority unless this was clearly wanted by the local community and was supported by both the authorities in question; notes with concern the decision to appoint in a suspect and unethical manner a new Chairman of the Macclesfield Health Authority who, without prior notice or warning, removed the Chairman of the Appointments Panel of the Macclesfield Health Authority, assumed that position himself, and proceeded, within hours of taking the Chairmanship, to appoint to the newly created position of Joint District General Manager of both the Macclesfield and the Crewe Health Authorities an individual who, as Personnel Manager to the Mersey Region under Sir Donald Wilson's Chairmanship, had personally compiled the shortlist for the vacancy, whose name had been added to the shortlist the day before the interviews, and whose family connections in other influential local health authority positions make the appointment open to allegations of impropriety; believes that these insensitive and politically-motivated decisions involving the Chairman of the Mersey Regional Health Authority display his total unsuitability any longer to be in a position of power or influence in the provison of health services; and suggests to the Secretary of State that she invites his resignation.
