Inland Revenue Repayment Offices

EDM number 1062 in 1992-93, proposed by Elfyn Llwyd on 14/12/1992.

That this House notes the current reports circulating in Wales which suggest that the Inland Revenue is intent on shutting its two tax repayment centres in Swansea and Wrexham and transferring its tax repayment centres' responsibilities in Wales to an office in Belfast; believes that such a transfer of Inland Revenue functions and jobs is both politically unacceptable and administratively unwise; further believes that such a transfer of tax repayment responsibilities will call into serious question the ability of the Inland Revenue to deal with enquiries from Welsh speakers; condemns the Government and especially the Secretary of State for Wales for twiddling his thumbs whilst key administrative posts are threatened with being transferred from Wales; further condemns a system whereby Welsh taxpayers' concerns might be dealt with by offices and employees who are not based in Wales; and calls on the Government to intervene and prevent any closure of the repayment offices in Swansea and Wrexham.
