Scottish Miners Walk To London
EDM number 1101 in 1992-93, proposed by Jim Hood on 16/12/1992.
That this House congratulates the Scottish miners who are walking to London in protest at the Government's announcement on 13th October to run down the mining industry and close 31 pits; notes that they have had fantastic support from millions of people as they have travelled through all the mining coalfields; and calls on the Prime Minister to acknowledge the case for coal, invest ú500 million, half the amount he intended spending on redundancy payments to miners, and provide a future for the British coal industry that would allow it to export 20 million tonnes into the EEC and improve the balance of trade deficit by ú1.6 billion.
