Unemployment In Plymouth

EDM number 1144 in 1992-93, proposed by Gary Streeter on 12/01/1993.

That this House notes with concern that the unemployment rate for Plymouth as at December 1992 is 14.5 per cent. compared to an unemployment rate for Dunfermline (Rosyth) at the same date of 12.4 per cent. with an increase since June 1990 of 2.8 per cent.; notes that whilst unemployment anywhere is to be regretted, recognises that the position in Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall is now critical; acknowledges that Devonport Dockyard has already shed 6,250 jobs since 1987 and Rosyth Dockyard 1,600 in the same period; applauds the Government's positive action to reduce unemployment by economic recovery; and recognises the importance of the Government awarding the contract for the refitting of the Trident Boat to Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth, in order to reduce the unacceptable levels of unemployment in Plymouth and the far west.

This motion has been signed by a total of 3 MPs.
