Coal Production And Pit Closures

EDM number 1348 in 1992-93, proposed by Dennis Skinner on 08/02/1993.

That this House condemns the Government's policy on pit closures and privatisation; calls for all the 31 pits to be brought back into full production; demands that imported coal be reduced to the Plan for Coal levels together with a coal export drive to Europe and elsewhere; suggests that no new opencast licences be granted and a reduction to 1979 levels; accepts the need to phase out the Magnox nuclear power stations and closure of the French nuclear link; believes that changing working practices in the British coal mines cannot be tolerated in such a highly dangerous industry; and reminds the Government and British Coal that closing mines and sacking miners and others when 4 million people are without work will result in further costs of ú9,000 per person being borne by a diminishing workforce and add to the ú25 billion unemployment budget.
