David Seymour And Mirror Group Newspapers

EDM number 1413 in 1992-93, proposed by George Galloway on 17/02/1993.

That this House congratulates David Seymour on his appointment as M. G.N. Group Associate Editor (Politics), knowing him to be an outstanding journalist of integrity with a proven commitment to the ideals of the labour movement; notes that during 15 years as a journalist on the Daily Mirror Seymour maintained this principled loyalty to the cause of labour until, unable to stomach the corruption of the Maxwell dictatorship he left the group, unlike some who took the tainted shillings until after the bitter end; recalls Seymour's work highlighting injustice in Britain as a reporter on the Paul Foot column and with Labour Weekly; notes that he is a former Chair of Hackney Central Constituency Labour Party, former F.O.C. of the N.U.J. on the Daily Mirror and a trades union activist throughout his career; considers that this integrity and fidelity to labour principles is a much more important guarantee of M.G.N.'s political orientation than any perceived closeness to any individual - who, in any case, come and go; and looks forward to a Daily Mirror which is not a Pravda for any individual but is instead a tribune of the people of Britain and the world whose cause was, is and will remain the cause of labour.
