Montgomeryshire

EDM number 1501 in 1992-93, proposed by Alex Carlile on 02/03/1993.

That this House regrets the decision of the Secretary of State for Wales to erase the ancient county of Montgomery as a local government unit; deplores the failure by the Secretary of State to respect the overwhelming public view that Montgomeryshire should be established as a unitary authority; notes with alarm that the proposed new authority of Powys, with an area of 509,000 hectares, would be twice the size of any other local authority in Wales; believes that more regard should have been given to the contiguity of the natural communities and local government boundaries; and calls upon her Majesty's Government to review the proposals contained in the White Paper, Local Government in Wales - A Charter for the Future, so as to re-establish Montgomeryshire as a local government unit.

This motion has been signed by a total of 15 MPs.
