Housing Policies Of Brent Council
EDM number 1552 in 1992-93, proposed by Ken Livingstone on 09/03/1993.
That this House notes with disgust that Conservative-controlled Brent Council is increasing council tenants' rents by up to 75 per cent. , with over 7,000 tenants facing increases of between ú10 and ú25 per week, in line with the stated policy of Tory Housing Committee Chair, Councillor Irwin Van Colle, that 'our revised rent levels will encourage right to buy as that ought to be cheaper than our rent levels' and his hope that the policy will 'help to damp down the demand from second generation Brent homeless cases'' and calls on the Secretary of State for the Environment to intervene and point out the inflationary impact of such increases as well as the simple inhumanity of the attitudes expressed.
