Prime Minister And Water Privatisation In Scotland

EDM number 1567 in 1992-93, proposed by Andrew Welsh on 10/03/1993.

That this House deplores the reply given by the Prime Minister to the question by the honourable Member for Angus East at Prime Minister's Questions on Tuesday 9th March in which he stated 'water privatisation in Scotland will be as effective and efficient as elsewhere'; condemns this tacit admission by the Prime Minister that the Government has already decided to privatise Scotland's water; believes that this makes a complete travesty of the Scottish Secretary's claim to be engaged in genuine consultation on the future of water services in Scotland; notes that the Prime Minister's blatant refusal to give an assurance that there would be no change in Scots law to allow the disconnection of domestic water supplies in Scotland; appreciates that the Prime Minister revealed the Government's intentions only in response to questioning by the honourable Members for Angus East; calls on the Government to make a full public statement rather than leaving it to the ingenuity of honourable Members to extract important information on the future of Scottish water services; and notes the opportunity for the Scottish people to express their outright opposition to any attempt to steal Scotland's water at the march and rally in George Square, Glasgow, on Saturday 13th March.
