VAT On Domestic Fuel

That this House is appalled that the Chancellor has decided that value-added tax should be applied to domestic fuel; believes that the most vulnerable in society will bear the biggest burden of such an imposition; notes with grave concern that it will affect the elderly, sick and infirm in Scotland more than elsewhere in United Kingdom, due to the climate; believes that the measure is simply to raise revenue rather than protect the environment; calls on the Government to expand the home energy efficiency scheme to enable increased categories of low-income households to become eligible for grant assistance; shares the view of Age Concern Scotland that the decision is irresponsible and that income support is already inadequate to maintain tolerable standards; believes that the measure will hurt those who have already been harmed by the economic incompetence of the present Government, particularly low-income families and pensioners living on the poverty line; and utterly condemns the Government's treatment of the less well off in society in the Budget.
