Labour Party And Social Chapter Referendum

EDM number 1822 in 1992-93, proposed by Dafydd Wigley on 21/04/1993.

That this House notes that the Labour Party Front Bench voted with the Conservative Government on New Clause 49 to the European Communities (Amendment) Bill, thereby preventing an opportunity to provide, through further amendment (a) which has been selected for a possible division, a referendum on implementing the social protocol in the United Kingdom; concludes that Labour is quite happy to march shoulder to shoulder with the Tory Government when it deems fit but expresses amazement that it should choose to do so on a vote that prevented progress on the Socal Chapter; and wonders whether this episode reflects more on Labour's tactical incompetence or on their hypocrisy, bearing in mind their condemnation of other parties who have stood by the Maastricht Treaty in recent weeks.

This motion has been signed by a total of 3 MPs.
