Local Government Commission

EDM number 2153 in 1992-93, proposed by Nigel Jones on 14/06/1993.

That this House congratulates the Local Government Commission on carrying out its first tranche remit in a speedy and efficient manner; believes Humberside, Avon and Cleveland, as creations of the 1974 review, are different from the historic counties; notes the cost of the review, so far, is in excess of ú2.5 million; further notes that the case for changing the structure in the historic counties and districts of England has not been proved; further believes that the money that has been spent on the Local Government Commission could be spent on more deserving causes; and calls on Her Majesty's Government not to proceed any further with the review and to wind up the Commission to prevent further resources being wasted on an unnecessary review of local authorities that function perfectly well at the moment.
