Strathclyde Region And Govan Initiative

EDM number 2195 in 1992-93, proposed by Alex Salmond on 22/06/1993.

That this House regrets the decision by the ruling Labour group on Strathclyde Regional Council to remove from the board of the multi-million pound development agency, the Govan Initiative, the elected councillor, Mr David Crossan, whose ward accounts for 75 per cent. of the area covered by the Govan Initiative, despite the fact that he had accepted an invitation to serve on the board from the Initiative itself; believes such behaviour has no place in a modern, open and democratic local authority; calls on Strathclyde Region's ruling Labour group to stop running their affairs as if they were a one party dictatorship; believes this decision shows breathtaking arrogance and utter contempt for the democratic wishes of the local electorate in Goven; calls on the Council to revert to past behaviour when the sitting councillor for the Govan area was appointed to the Initiative board; and calls on the honourable Member for Glasgow, Govan, who previously represented Strathclyde Region on the board and was Chairman of the Gowan Initiative, to disown this partisan and petty decision.

This motion has been signed by a total of 3 MPs.
