Southend Travel To Work Area

EDM number 2431 in 1992-93, proposed by Andrew Mackinlay on 27/07/1993.

That this House considers that the so-called Southend tarvel-to-work area is inappropriately named, that is title is misleading to the public, senior politicians and servants of the Hose and fails to reflect the geographical breadth of the area, stretching as it does from Thurrock and Brentwood in the west to Southend in the east of Essex; notes that it incorporates a large area of South Essex including Basildon, with over 6,000 unemployed and Tilbury, in Thurrock, with an unemployment rate exceeding 18 per cent; and considers that the honourable member for Thurrock has, at the very least, an equal mandate to speak for and on behalf of the unemployed in this area as do the honourable Members for Southend East and Southend West.

This motion has been signed by a total of 19 MPs.
