Liberal Democrat Housing Policy In Stepney

EDM number 2434 in 1992-93, proposed by Peter Shore on 27/07/1993.

That this House condemns the decision of the Liberal-controlled Stepney neighbourhood of Tower Hamlets Borough Council to sell on the open market all local authority homes and cottages as they become vacant, thus depriving those on the housing waiting list of urgently needed accommodation; believes that it is significant that Tower Hamlets Liberals should be following the lead of Westminster Conservatives in adopting such a policy; notes that certain Westminster Conservative councillors and former councillors are currently under investigation by the District Auditor for pursuing such a policy on the alleged ground that they were seeking to alter the electoral composition of certain wards; and calls upon the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Party, the Right honourable Member for Yeovil, to condemn this policy of his colleagues in Tower Hamlets and to secure its reversal.
