Labour Party And Rights Of People Of Northern Ireland

EDM number 2482 in 1992-93, proposed by David Trimble on 20/10/1993.

That this House notes with concern the publication by the Institute for Public Policy Research, an independent left wing think tank, of another proposal to expel the people of Northern Ireland from their present position within the United Kingdom and create a so-called shared or joint sovereignty with the Republic of Ireland over Northern Ireland, which joint sovereignty would be imposed on the people of Northern Ireland irrespective of their wishes in defiance of the principle of consent; considers that the fact that the authors include the honourable Member for Leicester South, a former research officer for and an academic who is believed to be currently a close adviser to the present Labour spokesman on Northern Ireland, the honourable Member for Kingston upon Hull North, makes it even more necessary for the leadership of the Labour Party to define its position in relationship to these ideas which constantly issue from within the Labour movement; further considers that there is an obligation on the honourable Member for Kingston upon Hull North, the honourable Member for Redcar, the honourable Member for Normanton, the honourable Member for Birmingham, Ladywood, the honourable Member for Hammersmith and the honourable Member for Wigan, the assistance of whom is acknowledged in this publication, to state precisely where they stand in relation to its proposals.

This motion has been signed by a total of 4 MPs.
