Right Of The Kashmiri People To Self-Determination (No. 2)

That this House records that on 27th October 1947 Indian troops occupied most of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and that 46 years later those occupying forces still remain in increasing numbers; calls on Her Majesty's Government to vigorously support the United Nations Resolutions of 1948, 1949 and 1960 which upheld the rights of the Kashmiri people to self-determination through a United Nations-supervised plebiscite thereby fulfilling the explicit commitment made to the people of Kashmir by Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India; expresses the gravest concern at the increasing evidence of Kashmiri alienation, the continual reports of human rights violations and the alarming rise in tensions and further bloodshed which have arisen in recent days from the siege of the Hazratbal mosque and the arrest of Mr Amanullah Khan, Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front in Brussels after Belgian authorities had granted an entry visa; and urges Her Majesty's Government to take the lead in raising these matters in the United Nations.
