EDM number 2532 in 1992-93, proposed by Jim Hood on 27/10/1993.
That this House welcomes the visit of 47 pupils and teachers from Larkhall Academy to the House of Commons on Thursday 28th October; notes that they have travelled 400 miles from their school in the Clydesdale constituency; pays tribute to the proud political history of Larkhall, a mining community that has been represented in Parliament by six Labour Members of Parliament since 1919; remembers Miss Mary Smillie, the daughter of Robert Smillie, Member of Parliament, who led a march and demonstration of hundreds of Larkhall women through the town to vote for the first time when women were given the vote in 1928; and recalls the strong friendship of Kier Hardie and Robert Smillie who lived in Larkhall before he was elected to Parliament in 1923.
