Use Of Premises In Tower Hamlets For Anti-Racist Rallies

EDM number 2554 in 1992-93, proposed by Peter Shore on 01/11/1993.

That this House condemns the decision by the ruling Liberal Democrat administration in Tower Hamlets to refuse recent attempts to book premises for anti-racist rallies by the Member of the European Parliament for Tower Hamlets and by the committee which represents Quddus Ali, the 17-year old who was brutally attacked in Tower Hamlets in early September and remains seriously ill in hospital; notes that attempts to book York Hall for peaceful democratic rallies had and have the support of honourable Members and of the European Parliament as well as a broad spectrum of national and local figures opposed to racism including the General Secretary of Liberty and members of the Anti-Racist Alliance; believes that the reasons given by the Globe Town Neighbourhood of Tower Hamlets Council are unsustainable and, in the light of the use of the Hall by the fascist British National party twice last year, sinister; and calls on Tower Hamlets Council to join in strengthening an anti-racist climate in East London.

This motion has been signed by a total of 63 MPs.
