Severn River Crossing Plc

EDM number 2594 in 1992-93, proposed by Rhodri Morgan on 04/11/1993.

That this House is appalled that the Welsh economy is being held to ransom yet again by toll increases from 1st January 1994 of nearly 10 per cent. on the Severn bridge; notes the double standards of the Government who breach pay agreements with nurses, the fire service and the police and insist upon a public pay bill freeze, yet allow toll increases eight per cent. above the rate of inflation to protect the position of a private monopoly; believes that following the evidence of appalling incompetence on the part of Severn River Crossing plc. on 1st October in the first known case of spontaneous levitation of a brand new road surface, the least the company could do would be recompense Welsh road users for the monstrous 10 mile long three hour traffic queues that were caused on that occasion; and calls on the Government to review its contract with Severn River Crossing plc.
