Threat To Scottish Ancient Monuments

EDM number 395 in 1992-93, proposed by Nigel Griffiths on 01/07/1992.

That this House notes the publication of the 38th Annual Report of the Ancient Monuments Board for Scotland and views with concern the failure of the Secretary of State to provide adequate resources to promote scheduling of 13,000 nationally important historic monuments; notes that only 5,000 of Scotland's 18,000 monuments have the statutory protection of scheduling, that it will take 43 years to complete the scheduling of the current list of important monuments which severely restricts the entitlement of monument owners to grants; recognises that education plays a critical part in the management and care of monuments; condemns the lack of an education officer at Historic Scotland which is hindering the introduction of children to the importance of our heritage; and calls on him to implement the 22 recommendations of the Ancient Monuments Board in full.

This motion has been signed by a total of 24 MPs.
