1993 Elections In Wales

EDM number 404 in 1992-93, proposed by Alun Michael on 02/07/1992.

That this House notes that the cost to county councils in Wales of the 1989 elections was well in excess of ú1 million and that considerable costs also fall on bodies which participate in the democratic process in Wales; notes that all the organisational and administrative work for everyone involved has to be set in train many months in advance of any election; notes that the Secretary of State for Wales, has informed Parliament that he is considering whether to cancel the 1993 elections in the light of his plans to reorganise local government in Wales; considers that it would be intolerable for uncertainty to be extended into the autumn by a failure to bring the matter before Parliament before the summer recess; and calls on the Secretary of State for Wales and the Home Secretary either to introduce the necessary legislation now or to announce to Parliament before the recess that the 1993 elections will go ahead and to publish a revised timetable for the reorganisation of local government in Wales.
