Treatment Of Detainees In India
EDM number 482 in 1992-93, proposed by Anne Campbell on 13/07/1992.
That this House notes with concern the continuing nationwide reports of torture, ill-treatment and death of detainees in custody in India; notes that the majority of victims come from the poorest and most marginal sectors of Indian society and are least able to seek protection, investigation and compensation; notes also that responsibility for the actions of the security forces lies within the Indian Government; and, in support of calls from within India, from the Press, civil liberties groups and some police officers for effective safeguards against custodial violence, urges Her Majesty's Government to press the Indian Government to take concrete action to provide effective redress to victims of torture and their families and to implement safeguards to prevent further cases of custodial violence.
